It's a GOOD thing. One of the things I really enjoy about using Fedora, is that they push the Linux desktop towards the future. Some call it bleeding edge, but it's not. It's cutting edge: you don't get the absolute latest, but you get the best that's also stable. Fedora was among the first to adopt Wayland, the first to adopt Pipewire, to push Flatpak, portals, the first mainstream distro to push immutable filesystems in Fedora Silverblue. This drive towards modern tech was what Ubuntu was doing back in the day: they were implementing the latest versions of GNOME, adopted newly developed programs at the time, like Banshee, or F-Spot, they pushed to have better driver integration, and more software available. Using Fedora, I got that same excitement I used to get when I was using Ubuntu: every 6 months, there's a new drop of amazing updates. You get more modern technologies, you get improved security, you get new features right as they're being released, and you get that sense of really taking advantage of all that new stuff the Linux community talks about. Fedora is a "current" distro, which means that you get the latest release of all the interesting stuff, like the desktop environments, the linux kernel, the graphics drivers, or wayland. And they do this without sacrificing stability. Fedora, in my experience with it, has been rock solid. In general, I didn't have many problems with any Linux distro that I daily drove, but all of them tended to exhibit small issues after a while. My experience with Fedora has been fantastic thanks to this: Flatpak is wonderfully integrated in the GNOME Software app, it's all a one click install, all updates are handled there, I just never think about my system anymore, I just use it. That peace of mind is something I never truly achieved with any other Linux distro Another thing I really like is that Fedora has the DEFAULT experience. They ship the desktop as is, without any meaningful extensions, themes, configurations, or tweaks. It's just productivity central. GNOME, for me, doesn't need anything else than the default experience. It is extremely efficient once you wrap your head around how it works, and providing me with a crutch, like an always visible dock, or desktop icons, would just compromise that productivity. Moving to Fedora also had me learn a few things, especially how to use dnf. I didn't need to use it, but I wanted to; and since I was a lot more familiar with APT, I had no idea what I was doing. Turns out, Fedora has a huge community as well, something Ubuntu has had since it began, so it's another checkmark next to my "Fedora is the next Ubuntu" checklist

Nobara takes Fedora, and adds the Wine dependencies, Steam, all necessary codecs for video playback, 3rd party drivers, like their own packages for the Nvidia drivers, which need a separate repo on Fedora, and a LOT of fixes to various packages. So, let's compare the post-install process for Nobara and Fedora. Nobara gives you a welcome app that's actually useful, and will offer to download codecs needed for video decoding and encoding. You can also install drivers there, like the nvidia or amdgpu pro drivers. It’s not a HUGE timesaver, if I'm honest. Maybe something like 5 minutes after the install. You can also change the layout and accent colors straight from the welcome app, with layouts based on Windows, Windows 11, macOS, GNOME, GNOME 2, or Unity. The default experience on Nobara on the "official" version uses a heavily modified GNOME. You get a taskbar, windows style, with Dash 2 panel, and the Arc Menu GNOME extension, for a more traditional menu. You have the APpIndicators as well for notification tray icons, you get BLur My Shell, for blurred translucent elements here and there, you get desktop icons, accent colors that can also be applied to GTK3 and flatpak apps, Pop Shell, for the auto tiling capabilities, and Wireless HID to display the battery level of controllers, keyboards and mice in the battery indicator. Window buttons also include minimize and maximize here. The laptop uses a 12th gen i7 12700H, with 16 gigs of RAM, and an RTX 3060, and everything runs from an SSD. With shadow of the tomb raider, running the game at the native 1440p resolution, on high details, Nobara got 87 FPS on average, with a minimum of 72, and a maximum of 144. On Fedora, using the same settings, and resolution, I got 83 FPS, with a minimum of 67. Running Horizon Zero Dawn, at 1440p, on high details, Nobara got an average of 64 FPS, with a min FPS of 22, and a max of 161, with a score of 11591. Fedora got an average of 63 FPS at the exact same settings, with a score of 11281, a high of 159 and a low of 21. And in Total War Warhammer 3, at 1440p, on medium settings and ultra unit size, Nobara reached 71.6 FPS on average, with highs up to 86 and lows down to 58. Fedora, with the same settings, got 69 FPS, nice, with a max of 84 and a low of 59. Nobara comes with its own graphical package manager, on top of GNOME Software. This thing show everything that is installed, or the available updates. It lets you install flatpak packages, and it has a graphical repo manager. Just to see if there was any difference between distros, I also tried to connect various bluetooth controllers, namely an XBox Series controller, and a PS5 dualsense. On Fedora all controllers connected immediately, and worked as intended, without any noticeable input latency. On Nobara, same experience. On Nobara, installing resolve didn't require anything specific. All the dependencies were already there, the nvidia drivers they package are perfectly good for it. You download it, you run the installer, and it works. Nobara even uses the cuda drivers, which has never been necessary for me on Fedora, I just install the cuda related libraries from the repos, or rpmfusion.

Debian vs Fedora vs Ubuntu

What do you think of Debian vs Fedora vs Ubuntu? Add Mint to that list, and I think you have the top four Linux distributions listed on Distro Watch. I don’t want Mint. Debian’s big draw is stability. But that’s in part because it has been around a long time, so it has had time to mature. Versus Puppy Linux and other cutely named ones. Fedora is named for a Spanish hat. How bad is that? I don’t know anything about the operating system. Fedora spun off from a graduate project by Togami. Fedora uses the GNOME desktop, similar to the one in Mint and Debian. Debian supports multiple desktops. Ubuntu only supports the Unity desktop, which many users hated. So if you have Unity desktop, you might like Fedora’s, or Debian’s. Ubuntu spun off from Debian, one of the oldest Linux versions. Oh, it’s mutated long past that line. But Ubuntu’s user interface is better, in terms of user friendliness and efficiency for non-programmers. Ubuntu is Linux for everyone else. Ubuntu lacks a dedicated home partition and some advanced features. Conversely, Debian’s installer asks you questions many beginners can’t answer, so you literally can’t get started with it as a newbie. How do Ubuntu, Fedora and Debian rate on hardware support? Ubuntu has better hardware compatibility. Debian has more device drivers that it developed independently of device manufacturers, improving OS compatibility and minimizing security holes. And you aren’t recommending Fedora in that regard. Not really. But Ubuntu does have great personal package archives that let you upload source code that can be turned into applications via the packager. I don’t know of that if application packaging for developers or its desire to reach out to developers. If you like gaming, you’ll like Ubuntu, since it supports Steam. Whereas Fedora and Debian don’t have as many games. Depends on what you need the system to do. For someone who wants to do homework and play games, Ubuntu is everything they need. Unless it is computer science homework.

But nowadays, I would put Ubuntu in Decent. Mint, nowadays, I feel it's really one of the best options for a lot of people. So, I'm going to put it in Great. elementaryOS is polished like nothing else, and I love what they're doing, but if we look at where it is today, it's lagging behind GNOME in most areas. So, as it stands today, elementary OS is only Decent. Arch is a distro I've used for a while. It's a wonderful learning experience. But Arch requires more manual intervention than most distros to keep running smoothly. So, Arch is going in Good, but only if you know what you're doing. If you're a Linux beginner, it's going into the No Way category. Another distro I used for a while is Solus, and I liked it for the Budgie desktop, and for its approach of building a Linux distro from scratch, without using Ubuntu as a base for example. But Solus is going in No Way, because it pretty much feels like a dying distro these days. Fedora is the distro I use everywhere these days. And yet, I'm still only placing it in Good, not Great. Because while I feel this is the distro that is pushing the Linux desktop forward these days, I also feel they miss the mark in some ways. The terrible installer, no Nvidia drivers at install, and no Flathub one click install (for now) are things that prevent it from reaching "great" status. Ok, let's talk Deepin. It's a basic desktop environment, but it's also a distro. And it's a distro I'm putting in No, Thanks. The Desktop environment looks beautiful, but the default apps are way too basic and can't handle half of the tasks I need from them. Installing anything else results in that nice unified look being completely broken, and as such, isn't a good experience. Now, let's talk about Manjaro, and this one is going into No, Thanks. It's a distro I used a lot on my desktop, but I just can't recommend it anymore. The distro itself isn't necessarily bad, but the way it's being run absolutely is. Debian Stable is rock solid, tested to perfection and the repos are huge and well maintained. So I'm putting it in GOOD, but personally, I would never run Debian Stable on anything other than a server, because it's way too outdated. Now let's move on to PopOS. For now, I'll only put PopOS in Decent, because it's in a limbo while they develop their new Cosmic desktop shell. No updates for a year, and no word on a version this year either, it's just not good enough for a desktop distro. Gentoo isn't for me. I tried it, I understand why it exists, but I also don't really feel the need to have almost everything I install be compiled for my hardware. I don't need this level of control over what I install. Still, Gentoo is going in Good. Not for me, but I'm not going to criticize it just because I'm not the target audience. Zorin OS looks cool, it has tons of layouts, it includes a bunch of tools, but Zorin OS will go into No, Thanks, though. Because it also suffers from the "not updated often enough" problem. Now, KDE Neon, that's a good one. It also uses an older Ubuntu LTS base, which can be a problem, but it has all the latest software from KDE, from the desktop to the apps, and that's a very good mix, so it's going in Good.
